How Freshborne engage with the 17 UN goals.
The UN's Sustainable Development Goals set the framework. Here is where Freshborne's confirmed product claims connect to them, and where we do not force the fit.
The UN Sustainable Development Goals aren't a checklist to collect. They're a shared map of what the world is trying to fix. The honest question for any company is not "how many can we claim?" but "which ones do what we actually do connect to, and how directly?" This article answers that question for Freshborne, grounded only in claims we can stand behind.
A note on approach
Freshborne has not made an official SDG partnership declaration or UN affiliation claim. The connections below are our interpretation of how confirmed product facts — near-zero food miles, pesticide-free growing, closed-loop water, and a decentralised model, relate to specific SDG targets. Each connection is traceable to a specific claim in the Approved Claims Library. We include only SDGs where the link is direct and mechanistic. We do not include goals where the connection would require a significant inferential leap.
The 7 goals where our claims connect
SDG 2: Zero Hunger
SDG 2 calls for ending hunger and achieving food security, including ensuring access to safe, nutritious food year-round. Freshborne's model produces consistent supply regardless of season, weather, or import disruption, and the decentralised pod-per-site architecture means a new growing site can be added where it's needed, one pod at a time.
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
SDG 3 includes targets around reducing exposure to hazardous chemicals and ensuring access to safe food. Freshborne's zero-pesticide claim is structural, not a policy choice. The sealed, controlled growing environment is built to keep out what pesticides exist to manage. No spraying decision is made, because no spraying need arises.
It describes the physical growing condition, not a list of permitted inputs.
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 6 includes the target of substantially increasing water-use efficiency across all sectors. Freshborne's closed-loop hydroponic system circulates and reuses its water rather than losing the excess to the ground. The system uses radically less water than field farming, not as an optimisation, but as a structural property of how water moves inside a sealed pod versus an open field.
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 9 calls for building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation. proxiPod and podIQ represent a novel infrastructure model: a fully autonomous growing system, seed to package, managed remotely.
The decentralised architecture, scale by adding sites rather than by building bigger facilities, is also a new infrastructure logic for food production.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
SDG 11 includes targets for making cities inclusive, safe, and sustainable, including access to food and green spaces in urban environments. Freshborne grows at the store where people already shop, inside it or outside in the car park. The farm is part of the urban infrastructure, not outside it. Food doesn't travel into the city, it grows in it.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 12 calls for sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources, and substantially reducing food waste. Freshborne's model takes the trucks, warehouses and distribution centres out between harvest and the shelf. About a third of food is lost or wasted (FAO 2011). A living plant growing on site doesn't spend days in a truck, warehouse, or distribution centre losing freshness and risking discard. What's harvested goes directly to the shelf.
The closed-loop water system also connects here: fewer inputs, tighter resource cycles, less waste per unit of food produced.
SDG 13: Climate Action
SDG 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change. Freshborne's link to this goal is structural: the model takes long-distance refrigerated transport out between harvest and shelf. Whether that lowers the total footprint depends on the pod's own energy use, which no life-cycle assessment has measured yet.
Note: Freshborne does not claim a specific percentage reduction in carbon emissions without a lifecycle assessment it owns. The climate connection is stated in structural terms, what the model removes, not in a quantified carbon-saving figure.
